In the windows XP default icon set (changed to default Vista set) I can change .png, .gif, .bmp but not .jpg.
Does the system not allow changing this icon?

I'm not sure about what IP can or can't do, but there is a good free program that will do it for you. Heres the link. http://www.xnview.com/

clwoods : Wothout knowledge about what Iconpackager does it is a bit strange to post in the wild. IP and xnView are two completely different programs for 2 completely different purposes.

From time to time I have programs which are registered to a particular file type that will override or maybe a better phrase would be reset the Iconpackager setting no matter how I set it in the IP config panel. What I have found that usually works is to right click on any file of that type, choose properties, and set the icon (from your iconpacakge) via the icon tab. This will make it harder to revert to your "original" icons because windows will maintain the association even if you uninstall IP.
Your other option would be to see what program jpg files are associated with via the same right click, properties and the 2nd box will show what program it's registered to. Once you know this you may be able to adjust a setting in the program which will change the icon or allow IP to change it. Or you can just register the jpg's back to the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer. I maintain this association so I can "choose" which graphics program I use to open a file via "Open With" on the right click menu.
